1993 Runrig Whiskey

Postby Edward Longlegs » Sat Jan 16, 2016 6:05 pm

I've just been given a bottle of whiskey, which I don't drink, that my uncle was given when he worked with Runrig in 1993. It has embossed signatures of the band and manger. Anyone interested in buying it? No idea how I'd post it but we can work that out. It's unopened of course. Is this allowed on here? Sorry if not, 8-)

Have you considered advertising it on eBay? The value of the whisky is difficult to determine without knowing which distillery it came from, single malt or (less likely) blend and a lot more. The value of the bottle is what a bottle collector might pay - and the combined value is anyone's guess! There's a website www.thewhiskyexchange.com that might be of use

I'm a whisky drinker and i buy whisky that I want to drink - not necessarily one that is going to sit unopened on a shelf.

Postage is no different from any other 'fragile' item - lots of packaging and then some more packaging.

(Before anyone else comments - I would be suspicious of Runrig Whiskey - wondering why on earth the Band was associating itself with something that wasn't Scotch :love: )

A quick google suggests that there have been at least three Runrig whisky (it's Scotch so no e) bottlings, though all date from well after 1993. Is yours one of these:
22 year old Highland Park cask strength "Live at Scone" "Dram of Destiny";
12-year old Aberlour "Scotch on the Rock" Edinburgh Castle;
and
20 year old Macallan "Beat the Dram".
All these seem to be rare. There is a record of the Aberlour being auctioned for £60, but the other two are more valuable - I'd say at least £100 for the Highland Park and probably about £400 for the Macallan. Nice if you have that last one....

I might come to England or Scotland. Thinking about going to the Edinburgh castle show, and my daughter will study in Coventry in the autumn. But don´t hold it specifically for me, if someone else wants to buy it, sell it. But if you have it left in a few months we can talk seriously about it!

Best keep it that way if you want to hold onto it as a possible investment (and keep the cardboard tube and signed certificate). Prices do vary. In recent years you could buy a bottle at auction for less than £100, but prices seem to have gone up since then. The most recent auction I've found (February 2016) brought a price of £350 (plus buyer's premium, of course) and Amazon are asking £419 for a bottle. On the other hand, Macallan themselves still seem to have a few bottles and are only asking for £155. There were only 500 bottles ever produced and, of course, the numbers available diminish every year!
