Blair Douglas Gaelic Mass

Postby CAPPSCUL » Wed Apr 15, 2009 11:53 am

We were on Skye for Easter and I saw in the Skye Magazine that Blair Douglas's Gaelic Mass is being held at St Mary's Church in Portree in Sept as part of the Blas festival. We went to this church for the Easter Vigil Mass, it is lovely, light wood and a big clear window. It was completed about 2 years ago but we didn't managed to go until this visit to Skye. The Vigil Mass was sung and very beautiful, but they didn't include any Gaelic singing.

He is also doing it in the Inverness Cathedral as part of Blas. It should be pretty special.

There is no return,
Once the seal's undone,
Morning dawning with life abounding,
But in time we all must fall,
And it seems to be this way,
Hearts change and brightness fades,
And it leaves you facing the days,
When your hope is blown apart,
Life is hard.

Only when the last tree has died & the last river has been poisoned & the last fish has been caught, will we realise that we cannot eat money.

Good article in today's Herald about Blair's Mass and his recent premiere at the Tattoo.

We're planning to go to the one in Portree on Sunday evening! It's also on in Fort William on Saturday.

We attended Blair's Gaelic Mass in Portree as part of the Blas festival. It was a moving experience and the church, St Mary's, was very crowded.

There were Inverness Gaelic choir together with several musicians playing pipes, harp, flute, violins etc. The choral and musical arrangments were prepared by Andy Thorburn from Blazing Fiddles. who was also the conductor. The concert was being recorded, so I hope that it may be available on CD?

Arthur Cormack and Fr Seamus (parish priest) welcomed us in Gaelic and English and Andy Thorburn explained the order of the peices. Blair has composed some hymns and instrumentals which were played before and after the five parts of the Mass.

Blair stood modestly at the back, and was pulled up to the front at the end by Fr and Andy Thorbun for emotional applause. I do hope the Gaelic speaking Catholic Church adopts the music for regular use, as Fr and the diocese seem very into the musical liturgy.

I assume everyone knows that The Gaelic Mass will be performed at Celtic Connections 2012, exactly 1 month from today?
