Blair Douglas - Stay Strong

Postby skyeman121 » Thu May 29, 2008 3:33 pm

Managed to get hold of a copy at the Aros Centre in Portree last night. This album if you like Blairs work, is excellent 8-)
Outstanding tracks for me were in no particular order
Martyn in mind - Instrumental
The Soldiers Lullaby - Vocals Eddie Reader
Lewis Love - Vocals - Rory MacDonald
Acadie, Sing me home - Vocals - Bruce Guthro, Paige Rees, Katie Rees, John Rees
Ceitidh Fiona's Waltze - Instrumental
Taladh An Iasgair - Vocals - Kathleen MacInnes
The rest of the tracks are also good. The album is totally different to his previous work in my opinion although theres no mistaking Blairs brilliant songwriting/tune skills. It has more of a Runrig feel to it and thats not counting the contributions of Rory, Bruce and Malcolm.
All songs and tracks were written by Blair and it gets a 10 out of 10 from me :)
Well worth shedding out the pennies for 8-)

Excellent! :music: I hope you'll have left enough copies there for me to buy one when we come to Skye in mid June! :D (If not, we'll be round to listen to yours! :P )

We also bought Blairs new CD same time as John. Yes I agree it's great, put it on the CD player in the car and listened to it over and over. I like the second track dedicated to a mother whos son was killed in Iraq. We just got back from Skye and it was the hottest week weve had in 10 years. Came back with a great tan!

OK, that's settled it.

I was swithering, but now I know Rory's on it! :D

So it's the Blair CD on my pink order form instead of the tour t-shirt... ;)

Lovely CD, am enjoying it travelling to and from work!

Rare hearing Rory, not only singing someone elses song, but not with Runrig either :music:

Yes very different to other BD albums, but his style still shines through. Now I wish I knew where my copy of AFtA has disappeared to - I have the box and no disc (me thinks its in the CD player we took out of old Volvo over a year ago to put in new Landy :? )

My CD arrived yesterday in one of the four packets of merchandise (then the whiskey arrived today!).

What a brilliant album!! There are some really good songs on there. The two that stand out most for me are Martyn in Mind (what a way to kick off an album) and the instant classic Lewis Love. Rory on vocals and Malky doing what he does!! He must have had a word with the drummer as he throws in a few 'Bayne' beats into the mix as well. Fantastic! I wonder if there is any chance of them playing this one live with Blair sometime (the Castle maybe?) it would be awesome!

Just bought a copy and think it's a fantastic album. I've always been a fan of Blair from his first album "Celtology" in 1984 but have found some of his albums a bit disjointed. This one, although having the usual wide range of styles, seems very complete. With vocalists like Michael Marra, Eddie Reader and Arthur Cormack, not to mention our own Bruce and Rory (with some help from Malcolm :)), each song is expressed in a very different way.

A lot of the subject matter of the songs stem from tragedies - deaths of Martyn Bennett and Rose Gentle's son, Hurricane Katrina and the sinking of the Iolair in World War II, but the songs and tunes are very uplifting.

Would be great if Blair could get all these artists together for a gig at next year's Celtic Connections.

I expected this album to be quite something, as Blair is an excellent artist. My expections were more than exceeded, and it was good to discover the varied artists and musicians that took part in this project.

An all round excellent production and well worth a spot in anyones collection.

Hmm. I've never really been a fan of Blair's albums to be honest, although he is a fantastic musician/writer I find a lot of the arrangements rather cheesy. However, this album is different. It's still not really my cup of tea, but there are a few tracks I think are fantastic:

Lewis Love: Very runrig
Martin in Mind: Very Martyn Bennett (rip)
'S Barail Leam!: very catchy
Taladh An Lasgair: haunting...who is the guy singing in it?

Acadie, Sing Me Home isn't too bad either.

The rest of the album doesn't really do anything for me and there are a couple I think are jsut horrid: Keep the Ceilidh Funky is just horrific in my opinion.

Like Fiery, I have to admit I don#t like eveyrthing Blair does unreservedly. I don't dispute his musical abilities, but he's not always my cup of tea. This is the most accessible album so far for me.

I like the variety and of course it's fascinating to hear our Runrig lads doing non-C&R material, and his themes are ones I have a connection to, like the Iolaire disaster (Lewis Love, sung by Rory).

But it doesn't alway go deep enough, lyrically, in comparison with C&R material, though maybe that's just false expectation.

I too like Taladh an Iasgair (the Fisherman's Lullaby).

The singers are Arthur Cormack from Skye and Kathleen MacInnes from South Uist.

In fact the album "Stay Strong" had so much PR on the Danish radio that it is now announced as sold out by Millstream Records, our solid providers of Folk-Rock music with celtic roots! Quite an achievement for Blair Douglas. ;)

Personally I like "Soldiers Lullaby" by Eddi Reader best, close seconds are Bruce and Rory. Very interesting to hear them sing non McDonald stuff, I agree. :rose:

Best wishes

This is one of my fav recent records (Jan 09)
The mixture of singers is great, Gaelic & English songs male and female singers fast and slow, track with RunRig boys at their best, some of the music feels like the atmosphere of an old ceilidh are a few of the highlights.
The accordian music in itself is worth it.
